how it started
Serve Society was born from the personal journey of its founder, Punit Dhesi, whose life has been defined by recovery, storytelling, and service. Before founding the organization, Punit built his career as a filmmaker, always drawn to the raw power of human stories. But his own struggle with addiction led him to a life-changing path of recovery—one that not only brought him healing, but also revealed a deeper purpose. In sobriety, Punit discovered that true transformation comes through community and service, and he made a commitment to dedicate his life to helping others find the same connection.
Barbering became the medium through which Punit lived out that commitment. Behind the chair, he discovered a profound truth: a haircut is never just a haircut. It restores dignity, renews confidence, and reminds people of their worth. As an addiction counselor, he saw firsthand how these small acts of care could ripple outward into life-changing moments for those in recovery, for the unhoused, for veterans, for youth, and for individuals with disabilities. Barbering was no longer just a trade for him—it became a ministry of human connection and compassion.
From this lived experience, Punit founded Serve Society—a collective that unites barbers, stylists, and volunteers under one mission: to serve others with purpose. The organization reflects the intersections of his story as a filmmaker, barber, and addiction counselor, all anchored by his unwavering belief in service. Today, Serve Society continues to embody Punit’s vision that every haircut can be an act of hope, every event an opportunity for dignity, and every life touched a reminder of our shared humanity.
